Cremation Keepsake
Cremation Keepsake
Should I make get a gem made for my husband using his father's ashes?
There's a company that takes cremations and makes gems and diamonds from the ashes. It costs about $3,000 to $6,000 or so.
My husband's father died young about 8 years ago and my husband still has his father's ashes in a keepsake box in our closet.
I was thinking of getting a diamond made and put in a pocket watch that he can keep and pass on to our children. Then we can scatter in a ceremony like my husband has always wanted.
Do you think this is a good idea? Him and his dad were best friends and I want him to have something other than ashes to keep.

My husband has said he loves the idea but it is too much money. I think he would love it.
My husband is the only child and his father wasn't married. That's why he has the ashes in OUR closet.
I think that making your father-in-law's remains into a diamond is a beautiful way to honor him. However, If your husband likes your idea and you go through with it, you might want to consider keeping it quiet as some people (as evidenced by the answer) are uncomfortable with the idea and judgemental. I don't see it as a problem. If should die, I think I would prefer that my ashes were made into a diamond rather than having them sit in a closet. This website, http://www.lifegem.com/ has some beautiful testimonials about honoring the dead through making gemstones.
Another way to keep an eternal legacy is through a living reef. I grew up near the ocean and this method is suprisingly popular in my hometown. Here is a link http://www.eternalreefs.com/
If you decide to scatter the ashes there are some companies that help you do so 'in style'. I'm not recommending any of them, but they might give you some good ideas for ceremonies. http://www.cremationsolutions.com/Helpful-Resources-for-Grief-Scattering-Services-and-More-c33.html
