Gobin, Betty Jean

2008-08-03

Betty Jean Gobin, 72, died August 3, 2008 at the hospital in Nevada, Missouri after a very sudden illness. At age 9, Betty Jean accepted Christ as her savior and at 12 led her 88 year old dying grandfather to Christ before his passing. A Nevada resident for the past 30 years, Betty Jean was very active in the First Baptist Church of Nevada, serving as WMU Director, Missions Director, Project Joy Organizer, Welcome Center Coordinator, Messenger to the Osage River Baptist Association, the Missouri Baptist Convention & the Southern Baptist Convention. Because prayer was important to Betty Jean, she was on the church prayer chain and an intercessor for the Intercessory Prayer Ministry.

Betty Jean was a homemaker with many side jobs through the years. She is survived by three sons: Clifford and wife, Peggy of Houston, TX; Stephen of Webb City; Brady and wife, Holly of Webb City; two sisters, Dorothy Keller of Lone Oak, TX and Louise Shore of Pratt, Kansas; grandchildren Benjamin, Nathanael, Samuel, Jonathan, Chelsea, Sawyer and Levi Gobin; step-grandchildren Carrie Christiansen, Derek Morton, Jessie Hears, Austin and Sam Gallardo; and three great-grandsons.

Betty Jean was born in 1936 in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Arnold Guy Tolar and Ola Lee Tolar. She grew up on a farm and graduated from both Natchitoches High School and Baylor University. At Baylor she met and fell in love with Donald Dean Gobin, also a student at Baylor. They married in 1957. Don's career took Betty Jean and their family to Lafayette, Louisiana; Edmond, Oklahoma; North Little Rock, Arkansas; Texarkana, Texas; Iola, Kansas and Nevada, Missouri.

Betty Jean & Don shared a passion for missions and participated in many short-term mission projects, including five to Mexico, eight to Venezuela, and three in the U.S. Betty Jean loved Christ and His church, her family, missions work, her friends and her country. She was a passionate soldier for everything in which she believed.

Betty Jean requested that memorials be given to the Missouri Baptist Children's Home at 11300 Charles Rock Rd, Brighton, MO 63044.
